  Hakka A Cappella Concert
Content:A local A Cappella group“Hot Potters” will perform famous Chinese and English songs without using any musical instruments and will even try to sing some of the famous Chinese pop songs in Hakka dialect. A special guest Miss Cheng Ah-kiu, an elderly Hakka lady is invited to perform traditional Hakka songs which narrate life of villagers in the past.

  Lo Yau's Lecture Romance of Sam Tung and the Hakka people in Tsuen Wan
Content:Famous radio storyteller “Lo Yau” is not telling fictional stories this time, but lecturing on historical anecdotes about Sam Tung Uk, a traditional Hakka walled village that was founded by a Chan clan who settled in Hong Kong in the 18th century. The clan’s distant ancestors can be traced back to Fujian province. Chan Yam-shing, the 13th ancestor of the clan came with others to Tsin Wan (present-day Tsuen Wan). They worked hard to earn their living, and more importantly preserve their Hakka tradition. Through the lively and dramatic presentation by Lo Yau, the struggles and achievements of the Chan’s clan as well as the Hakka people of Tsuen Wan can thus be well explained.
The character “Lo Yau” is played by Patrick Pak, a renowned local dramatist and historical educationist.

  Storytelling Pa Ma
Content:The performance is jointly presented by Tsuen Wan District Council and Ming Ri Institute for Arts Education. By training local volunteers, the free touring performances aim to bring joy to families in the district and promote the harmony of Tsuen Wan through arts and culture. Each performance lasts about an hour and includes two to three groups of different artistic styles who will share their childhood and family stories with the audience.

Content:Children can experience the lives in sixties and seventies through games and role play in a skilfully replicated environment of the past. The fun and relaxing roleplaying allows parents and children to learn of different traditional occupations and try the skills of the trades. The traditional games played in housing estates allow families to reminisce the days of the past while enjoying quality time with each other.

  Roselle Workshop
Content:Roselle is a current popular health supplement. The workshops will teach participants how to make food products using Roselle, like Roselle jam and Roselle succade. In addition, participants will be taught of the methods to extend the consumption period of food and experience the joy of cooking.

  Natural Beeswax Lip Balm DIY
Content:The workshop will teach participants how to make their own lip balm by using natural ingredients and also the knowledge of these natural ingredients.

  Hakka Tea Cake Workshop
Content:Tea cakes are traditional Hakka delicacies and the ingredients differ depending on seasons. Some examples of tea cakes are the Chinese Fevervine Herb tea cake, Radish tea cake and Hee Pan. Participants can not only learn how to make tea cakes, but also the cultures and traditions of Hakka people.

  Traditional Handicrafts Workshop

  When and What to Pickle Workshop
Content:The workshop teaches participants what the proper food to eat in different seasons and how to maximize their taste and preserve them. Carrots and mustard greens are the food of winter and mentors will demonstrate how to convert them into traditional pickled food to students.

  Hakka Yellow Rice Wine Workshop
Content:According to the Hakka tradition, Hakka women would drink the self-brewed yellow rice wine to restore their body condition during the postpartum confinement period. The yellow rice wine is also an important ingredient to the Hakka delicacy of “Steamed Chicken with Yellow Rice Wine”. Participants will learn how to brew this traditional Hakka wine and have a chance to taste the famous Hakka dish.

Remark:Ingredients for brewing yellow rice wine (about 200ml) will be provided for participants. Please bring along your own container, preferably those made of glass.
Notes 1As some of the workshops will be held in rural areas, please wear suitable clothing (light-coloured long sleeve shirt, light-coloured long pants and sport shoes) and bring along potable water and mosquito repellent.
Notes 2Some workshops require walking up mountain roads and slopes. Participants should make sure they are in good physical condition before joining.
  Regional Planning and Conservation
Theme 1:Miss Vincci Mak, the Assistant Professor at Hong Kong University of Landscape Architecture and Mr Stephen Suen, the part time Assistant Professor at Hong Kong University of Landscape Architecture will explore the real meaning behind “Real Estates” and explain the importance of the natural environment, resources and land productivity of Tsuen Kwai Tsing in influencing the development and creation of local cultures and advantages in industrial developments and shaping the local city lifestyles.
Theme 2:Mr Andrew Lam, JP, a member of the Hong Kong Antiquities Advisory Board and Mr Simon Go, the founder of HULU Culture will exchange their views and experiences on regional conservation with the participants in the interactive workshop.

  Hakka History and Culture
Theme 1:Dr. Edward Yiu will give an account on “Tsuen Wan Hakka History: The Tripe Waves of Evacuation”. The account will introduce the history of evacuation in Tsuen Wan.
Theme 2:Dr Lau Yee-cheung, the Academic Director of the Christianity & Chinese Culture Research Centre and Dr Jing Zheng, an architectural specialist in Fujian Tulou will talk about the Hakka Tulou and its cultures.
