LEUNG Ki Cheong, Henry (Architectural Designer) and“Prototype”, The Architectural design group
Henry Leung Ki Cheong graduated from the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture in the U.K. in 2006, has more than 8 years’ working experience in architectural design in Hong Kong and the U.K., and he has also won many awards in architecturale design competitions. Henry established the architectural design group known as “Prototype” in 2005, which has participated in various exhibitions such as appearing at the Standard Chartered Book Festival in 2006 with a design using bamboo as a theme, constructing the 2006 Lantau Arts Festival’s bamboo pavilion and its latest work in 2012 is known as “Sculpt the Light”, an installation art.

“Our design group would often explore via different angles the relationship between art and architecture, unconventionally using materials, coupled with various usages of geometry to bring about a brand new experience of space. The projects are mostly ‘prototypes’ of 1:1 scale to form the design basis, searching for corroboration between concepts and reality, as we uncover new possibilities in architectural design.

The positioning of a centre hall in their Tulou round dwellings demonstrates clearly that the culture of the Hakka people has a focus on “sharing”. To emphasise this point, the central hall uses a self-rotational geometric design to let participants view the beauty of a balanced and even structure. The project is also designed in such a way that different effects formed from light and shadow are produced during different time of the day. The inspiration for this design comes from polymerised bamboo chopsticks and symbolises the spirit of solidarity and the cohesion of Hakka people.
