Gala Cafe
The Super Big Omelette is in Town

Food stuff have become increasingly expensive due to inflation. While other restaurants raise prices, Gala Cafe still abides by the motto “Big Portions and Affordable Prices”. Their eight tables are packed with customers all day long, some are old clients, but new customers also come, in search of the giant omelette made with six eggs, sandwiches as thick as the telephone directory, and iced red beans with big big beans. If you ask Mak Hung Kwan the owner why he uses such big portions, he would reply that he “wants customers to be fed well and be satisfied”.

Both the boss and the wife do not sit at the cashier’s corner, but are each busy at the bar or in the kitchen preparing food – frying eggs, boiling noodles, or deep-frying wontons; they attend to all matters by themselves, husband and wife as one team. Mr. Mak has run the cafe for 34 years; at first he worked at the Happy Cafe in Tai Wo Hau, but after making some money he came to San Tsuen Street and bought the current premises. For decades he served customers who live in Tai Uk Wai and the Four Seasons Houses (four demolished estate blocks named after the seasons), and those regular customers are middle-aged by now. Most of his life he spent working hard at the cafe, starting 6am daily to get food ready, opening shop at 10am and closing at 7pm, then he would put on some symphony music while doing the books and cleaning up the shop, going to bed only at 3am. From working long hours he hurt his legs and his waist, but Mr. Mak never complains, he continues to serve his customers well, freshly cooking ordered items, and honourably maintaining the shop.
