Tsuen Wan’s old districts are famous for having many markets. Outdoors or indoors, Chuen Lung Street is filled with market stalls. Plenty of shops are available, enough to meet the needs of Tsuen Wan residents and outsiders too. Three markets here are operated by Hong Kong’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department – Tsuen Wan Market, Yeung Uk Road Market and Heung Che Street Market. Furthermore, Market Street, Chuen Lung Street and Yeung Uk Road are close to Tsuen Wan Market, so the roads in the neighbourhood are filled with dried or wet market goods, looking like an outdoor bazaar. A public light bus terminal is close-by on Chuen Lung Street, adding to the vibrancy of the district.
The earliest open-air bazaar in Tsuen Wan was on Yeung Uk Road. Later the Yeung Uk Road Municipal Services Building was built, so merchants and hawkers moved indoors because of the concessionary rent. The road then has more free room on the two sides. Still later, many hawkers saw that street-stalls have better business, so they set up stalls again on Yeung Uk Street, Ho Pui Street and Chuen Lung Street, forming an open-air market. Tsuen Wan Market was built at a later stage, and Chuen Lung Street has indoor markets at both ends (Tsuen Wan Market and Yeung Uk Road Market). It is a unique scene with high-rises, shopping malls and markets co-existing.
