Ping Fu Path
and Ping Lai Path
A Pakistani Community

Kwai Chung’s Ping Fu Path and Ping Lai Path are parallel to each other, with Ta Chuen Ping Street and Castle Road on the two ends. The two paths look rather small and seemingly there is nothing of interest. However, a small community of Pakistanis can be found here.

Kwai Chung used to be booming with factories and had a flourishing population. For convenience, many workers chose to live in the tenements on Ping Fu Path and Ping Lai Path, and a small workers’ community was formed. In the 1980s many Hong Kong factories relocated to China, so the workers residing on Ping Fu and Ping Lai paths also moved out, and residential rent plunged, which attracted many Pakistanis to move in. Several years ago, Kwai Tsing District became a district where many Pakistanis live, and Ping Fu Path and Ping Lai Path turned into an important community centre for them. There is a mosque and madrasa located upstairs, and children can learn Quran here. The Pakistani faithful will make offerings to maintain the mosque and education centre. On the streets there are halal food stores, Islamic restaurants and stores which sell Pakistani daily groceries, making it convenient for nearby residents.

One of the restaurants is called “Pak Muslim Curry Restaurant”, founded by Nawaz, from Pakistan. Each cup of tea is freshly brewed when ordered. Nawaz has to boil the water, put in the milk, then tea leaves, straining, adding spices, with the process taking many minutes, so when several cups are to be prepared, customers would have to wait patiently to be served in turn.
