Lun Kee Plastic Bags
A Shop for Bags, Boxes and Wraps

If we say Lun Kee is the “King of Plastic Goods”, we would not be talking nonsense, since there are more than a thousand kinds of utensils sold in this shop – plastic bags, straws, lunch boxes, napkins, rubber bands, and for plastic bags alone there are over one hundred kinds. Having done business in Tsuen Wan for over fifty years, Lun Kee is the sole supplier to a large numbers of shops and vendors, and it has witnessed how packaging has changed through the years.

Decades ago, packaging just means using paper and one wet straw to wrap up meat and vegetables and take them home. However the paper got specialised; there would be newspaper and brown paper, and also paper was subcontracted to part-time workers at homes, to be made into triangular paper bags and ease the wrapping of small items. The boss Yu Chun Ming says that he came to Hong Kong as an illegal immigrant in the 1960s, and took roots here on San Tsuen Street. The golden era of Lun Kee was in the 1980s when the mainland was opening up. Many people travelled back and forth to China in those days, and the boats which call on nearby ports of Taishan, Shunde, Zhongshan, etc. would place large orders with him, such as for cups, bowls and eating utensils. With progress through the years, packaging materials took on many changes, takeout boxes changed from paper boxes to styrofoam, and now they have become microwavable materials. It seems that humble small items have made up the wonders of normal citizens’ lives.
