Dai Foon Hay Bakery
Dai Foon Hay Bakery – Happy with Bread and Cakes

“Selling cakes at the front and making cakes at the back” is the mode of the day for the shop Dai Foon Hay (or “Big Happiness”). Passers-by can see the boss Yu Yun Wing bare-chested at work, from 6am to 6pm the ovens keep producing batches after batches. In the morning there are Chinese-style buns and cakes, sandwich bread at noon, Western cakes in the afternoon. Kneading flour, wrapping fillings, pressing into moulds, all is done manually and not by machines, and always done by Mr. Yu.

Dai Foon Hay is now in its second generation, the original boss was Yu’s father, who already was a well-trained baker when he moved to Hong Kong before the war. Old Mr. Yu would bake in the early morning, and then hawk his bread, buns and cakes on the streets, carrying his wares around by a shoulder-pole. Later he set up his own bakery on Tsing Yi Island’s main street, calling it Dai Foon Hay, in wishing that his bread and cakes will bring other people great joy. In 1978 they moved to the current site. Among his children, the sixth son Yu Yun Wing picked up the skills the quickest and was able to make cakes after he started to work. From his teens, Yu has been a baker, and in a blink of an eye more than four decades have passed by.
