Chung On Street
The First Road of Tsuen Wan

Even as late as in the 1950s, Chung On Street was still the only significant road in Tsuen Wan, and a bazaar or town was formed here. In the 1930s, the former Heung Yee Kuk chairman, Mr. Chan Wing On, founded “Dai Chung Teahouse” and “Ping On Pharmacy” in the area, and “Chung On Street” was named after these two shops.

At first, Kwai Chung, Tsing Yi and other districts did not have much of their own markets, so residents from all over would come to Chung On Street by buses and boats, and here they can find more shops. In 2003 the government wanted to strengthen local economy and to establish a Tsuen Wan specialty, therefore a “Tsuen Wan Jewellery and Goldsmith Square” was created around the areas of Chung On Street, Sha Tsui Road, Chuen Lung Street and Market Street.

Chung On Street is now crowded with shops and still many of them are jewellery shops, so the street is also known as “Jewellery Street”. Many mainland individual visitors today will comb the district and shop for jewellery.
