Sam Tung Uk used to be part of a Hakka village with a history of over 200 years. It was established by the Chan family which migrated from Guangdong in 1786. The village was subsequently relocated in the 1970s to the north of Cheung Shan Estate, on the southern slope of Tai Mo Shan, due to the construction of the MTR Tsuen Wan line.
The origin of the name “Sam Tung Uk” comes from the structure of the three-hall building design. The symmetrical layout of the village resembles a chessboard with an entrance hall, an assembly hall and an ancestral hall along the central axis, and four-free standing houses to either side. Each hall is supported by a pillar known as “tung” and thus receives its name, “Three-beam-dwelling”.
Sam Tung Uk was declared a monument in 1981. The regional council converted the village into the Sam Tung Uk Museum and the museum was opened to the public in 1987.
