Ma Wan’s Old School | ![]() |
Established by the Chan clan in the 1920s, the Study Hall was an old private school located in Tin Liu Tsuen of Ma Wan, originally known as “Chan’s Study Hall”, offering tutor classes in the “Pok Pok Chai” style.
The study hall was built by the Chan clan to provide education for children in their village and also others residents on Ma Wan Island. However, children from Lantau Island, Penny's Bay, Yam O and Green Island also sought schooling here as well. Thus, the study hall was renamed “Fong Yuen” after a Chinese proverb which means a school which breeds many scholars.
The 1960s and 1970s were the golden era of the Study Hall, and in 1965 the Ma Wan Fong Yuen Public School was built to cater to the further needs of the large number of students. Student population began to decline from the 1980s, and the Study Hall was closed in 2003. It became one of the first seven historical buildings chosen for the Development Bureau’s “Revitalising Historic Buildings through Partnership Scheme”, and became the “Tourism and Chinese Cultural Centre cum Ma Wan Residents Museum” in 2008. It was listed as a Grade III Historical Building by the Antiquities Advisory Board in 2010.
