Yeung Ching Ka Shuk | ![]() |
Located at the old Kau Wa Keng Village on Lai King Hill Road, Yeung Ching Ka Shuk (or Yeung Ching Study Hall) was one of the first village schools subsidised by the government in 1922, and it has a curriculum considered modern in those days, such as English, geography and physical education. It was replaced by Yeung Ching School in 1971 and the old building remained vacant till the mid-1990s, and then turned into residential use. It was later converted into a meeting place for the Village Office in 2003.
The school dated back to the Qing Qianlong era (1736-1795), but the two-storey building was constructed in 1921 to replace the old study hall, and had a style of 1920s-1930s Western bungalows. The name “Yeung Ching Ka Shuk” was carved above the main door. A scholar, Yeung Kwok Sui (no relation to Yeung Ching) came from Tsuen Wan in the 1910s to teach in the school. The building was once the hiding place for revolutionaries on the run, and it underwent several reconstructions during the 1940s and 1950s.
