Kwan Mun Hau Village Representative, Tsuen Wan Rural Committee
Tsuen Wan Rural Committee was founded in 1939, its predecessor was “Chuen On Kuk”, and the Rural Committee became the bridge between villagers and the Government to facilitate communication. In the 1960s, in line with the plans to develop Tsuen Wan as a satellite town of Hong Kong, Kwan Mun Hau Village became the first village in Tsuen Wan to be relocated. The village elders formed a “Village Relocation Committee”, so that villagers can negotiate relocation matters with the Government.
“Because the government developed Tsuen Wan on a large scale, the reclamation work often caused water to clog up on Sha Tsui Road, and villagers suffered from frequent flooding. Relocating the villages was an opportunity to improve living conditions. Some finally gave up farming and joined factories, while some persisted with their farms. We each used our own ways to create a new life.”
