Law King Shing |
Born and raised in Tsing Yi, Law King Shing was especially concerned for the place he grew up in, and so he gradually took part in district affairs. In 1992 he joined the Tsing Yi Trade Association, and later became the Chairman of Tsing Yi Residents Association. From 2011 onwards, Mr. Law is Vice-Chairman of Kwai Tsing District Council. He witnessed how Tsing Yi Island’s population grew from 2,000 to 200,000, and with the Kwai Tsing District having the largest public housing population within the 18 Districts of Hong Kong, Law dedicated himself to help local residents to improve community facilities.
“In April, just this year, Tsing Yi once more held the dragon boat races, which had stopped for some 30 years. In the 1980s, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing had so many dye factories, and with slack regulation, the sea was really polluted. Water would change colours, to the same colours currently used at the dye factories. And then the factories moved north, and the Government also added tighter controls, so the water quality started to get better. Therefore the dragon boat races could finally re-open, after talking about it for many years.”
