Chan Sung Ip
Chairman, Ma Wan Rural Committee

Chan Sung Ip was born in Tin Liu Village of Ma Wan, and his father was on the Board of Directors of the Fong Yuen School there. Chan, as well as Chan’s own children, also studied at Fong Yuen School, so they make up three-generation of alumni for the school. Perhaps as a result of this, Chan Sung Ip was nicknamed “Ma Wan Island Chief”. In the 1950s and 60s, Ma Wan was in its heydays, and Fong Yuen School had its highest enrolment at that time, with 50 to 60 students in each grade. The Education Department even sent two extra teachers to the school especially. However at that time, the Island Chief and some classmates would often play truant.

“In those days teachers will mete out corporal punishment. For naughty students like us and for those who failed dictation tests, the teachers would use ruler or rod to smack our palms, and they also punish us with ‘toting mud’, assigning us to haul mud to fill up the ponds.”
