Yuen Yuen Institute
Leung Wing Yu, commonly called Elder Brother Yu, was a wild child. After he grew up, he became a delivery boy, then a driver, and he studied while working. He finally graduated in social work, and in 1981 became the head of Yuen Yuen Institute’s Elderly Centre. Under his leadership during these 30 years, the Institute grew from two elderly homes and two elderly centres, to the current 23 elderly homes and centres, the scope also extended to include nursing home, women centre, services for children with learning disabilities, etc.; the services are increasingly comprehensive.
“In the past Tsuen Wan was like a small village; there was mud on both sides of the lanes. To go to work at the Yuen Yuen Institute, I would ride a ferry from Central to Tsuen Wan, and then took a bus. Many colleagues did not finish secondary school in those days, and I would urge them to study more, but now every single one of them has higher academic qualification than me. This was helpful to the Institute later on, to develop recreational and sports facilities, as well as tourism services.”
