Chu Kong Sim Yuen

Located in Tsuen Wan’s Lo Wai Village, Chu Kong Sim Yuen was formerly a residence and a school, with activity rooms for youths in the village, before it became a temple. The Buddhist sect was located in Guangdong before moving to Hong Kong some 50 years ago. The presiding monk bought this hundred-year old building and transformed it into today’s temple. In addition, he also built the Chu Kong Villa close by, serving as a home for the elderly. Due to leakages of the temple’s roof which were difficult to repair, an iron cover was built to protect the old-styled tiled roofs. This however concealed the original appearance of the temple. Today, many worshippers would still flock to the temple during Buddhist feast days, for gatherings and joining hands to cook vegetarian meals.

Chu Kong Villa’s simple and quiet environment made it perfect for being an elderly home, and it served aged spinsters. As Hong Kong’s services for the elderly improved through the years, Chu Kong Villa’s elderly care service completed its mission and has closed down; the premises are now under the care of a lay monk and an old lady. The Villa is not open to the public.
